Non-Traditional Child Care Hours

Puyallup Tribe of Indians
Program Services

Demographic Information:
The Puyallup Tribe of Indians reside on an urban reservation in the Tacoma, Washington - Puget Sound area.

Type of Program:
The Puyallup Tribe operates an early care and education program for children ages birth through school age.

Effective Program Strategy:
The Puyallup Tribe provides high quality, culturally appropriate early care and education plus out-of-school time care during non-standard (evening and weekend) hours.

Collaboration between the Suquamish and Puyallup Tribes and funding from the state of Washington began the non-traditional child care program. Another "quality grant" was received from the State of Washington to continue evening and weekend care.

Resources:
The program receives both State CCDF funding and Tribal CCDF funds.

Results:
The child care center was built to serve 42 children. Sixty-five to seventy children are being served in the center due to the non-standard hour care program.

Lessons Learned:
The non-traditional hours program is costly to operate. Recruiting and retaining trained staff to work non-standard hours continues to be a challenge. Maintenance of the building is also challenging, as children are always present. Additional funding is needed to supplement current expenditures.
